Good post - I try to encourage others to test their soil aswell using a kit similar to this.........though for years I just used one of those metal things that you stick into the soil to give a reading. I can remember at a horticultural course the most difficult part some of the students had was opening up that little green capsule.

Hi Becky,
Thanks very much for your kind note. And I really appreciate the nomination! I don't think I've been nominated by anyone else. If you do some soil testing, let me know how it goes. Now that I've started, I'm excited to test other troublesome spots around my yard and see what I find out.

Meleah,
I have not tested my soil and my major in college was soils. In my defense, I have been meaning to. I will before I get my blueberries in. Great post!
I nominated you for the versatile blogger award. I really like your blog and wanted to include it in my nominee list. If you have already been nominated do not feel like you have to accept my nomination. Thanks and keep up the great blog.

It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it! Otherwise, how will we ever really know the success rate of the new introductions? Best of luck with your trials. I'm with you, I'm sort of over the Echinaceas, but there is always a stunner that I drool over every season!

I'm not sure. A friend who works on the show says he knows Bachman's takes back many of the plants they installed. I don't know what they do with them after that, though. I'm sure some plants don't last through the show and get tossed out.

Thank you for the good wishes. Everything seems to be going well now that they're settled into some better bedding. Whew!

Good question. Mason bees are typically orchard pollinators. They need to be released when they'll have a food source available, so it's best to wait until some plants are in bloom, which is usually late April or early May in Minnesota. Raising mason bees successfully is not difficult, but there are some important things to understand. I would recommend reading the "What to Do" section of the Crown Bees website: http://www.crownbees.com/category/what-to-do/getting-started.

I was just thinking about the worm cut in half thing this morning. I was working in my raised bed, where I have a ton of worms, and I accidently chopped one. At least it's top half will be fine. I hope your worms will be happier in their new home.
